Strategic Megaproject: Great Nicobar Deep-Water Port Installs Massive Ocean Breakwater

  • Overview: India is physically reshaping the Andaman Sea. Today, engineering teams successfully installed the first massive ocean breakwater for the Galathea Bay International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT).
  • Key Points:
  • Taming the Ocean: A breakwater is a massive wall built out into the sea. It protects the harbor from violent ocean waves and cyclones, creating perfectly calm waters for ships to dock safely.
  • Deep-Draft Berthing: Once completed, this port will have a natural depth of over 20 meters. This allows the world’s largest mega-container ships to dock here directly, ending India’s reliance on ports in Sri Lanka and Singapore.
  • The Malacca Strategy: Galathea Bay sits just a few nautical miles from the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest trade routes. This port allows India to dominate this critical geopolitical chokepoint.
  • Economic Gateway: This megaproject transforms the remote Great Nicobar Island into a bustling economic hub, seamlessly connecting India’s eastern coast to the markets of Southeast Asia.
  • Q10. The strategic megaproject involving a massive transshipment port and a greenfield international airport is being developed in Galathea Bay. Where is Galathea Bay located?
  1. South Andaman Island
  2. Little Andaman Island
  3. Great Nicobar Island
  4. Lakshadweep Archipelago
